520 bridge closed for repairs after damage discovered
Seattle Times staff reporter
The Evergreen Point Floating Bridge across Lake Washington will remain closed for emergency repairs through at least Thursday morning after engineers found damage to bolts.
State Transportation officials hope to reopen the bridge for the morning commute, said Stan Suchan, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
Engineers inspect the floating bridge regularly during windy weather and this afternoon they reported finding damage to bolts on the trunnion beams — structures that stabilize the bridge when it opens and closes, Suchan said. A weather system has brought high winds to Western Washington.
The bridge will remain in the open position while bridge specialists from across the region make repairs.
Inspections of the bridge following a Feb. 4 windstorm revealed a small crack in part of the steel assembly that supports a guide roller under one corner of the east drawspan. Repairs resulted in closures to the bridge last month.
