YAKIMA — Two men have been charged with murder in what police say was a gang shooting over a mistaken impression stemming from a Washington State University sweatshirt.
Bail was continued yesteday at $5 million each on Arturo "Chilango" Juarez-Garcia, 20, Juan Carlos Guzman, 19, who were both charged with first-degree murder and four counts of first-degree assault.
In addition, Victor M. Valencia, 19, and a 16-year-old boy were being held as material witnesses in the death of Octavio Abundiz Jr., 21, of Yakima, a restaurant cook and dishwasher who was riding in a Jeep that was hit by gunfire while stopped at an intersection Feb. 23.
In documents filed by Yakima County prosecutors in court, Juarez-Garcia was described as the shooter and Guzman as the driver of the other car that was involved and an accomplice who helped dispose of a revolver that was later recovered from a creek near the airport..
Juarez-Garcia, Guzman, Valencia and the juvenile, members of the Soreno gang whose color is blue, were cruising in rival gang turf and targeted the Jeep because someone inside was wearing a red Washington State sweatshirt, investigators wrote.
No one in the Jeep was a gang member, police said.
