Sunday Best: A glimpse of fantasy on a Paris runway
Elie Saab’s collection was a highlight of Paris’ Haute Couture Fashion Week, as this gown attests.

One last peek from Paris’ Haute Couture Fashion Week, which ended earlier this month and which saw dozens of gloriously over-the-top gowns marched down glamorous runways: this Elie Saab confection, which just seemed to whisper “summer” despite being part of a fall/winter collection. Spattered with roses and sequins on top and fading to a cloudy blue below, it seems less dress than fantasy. Saab (who famously dressed Halle Berry for her 2002 Oscar win, in a wine-colored gown with sheer top and voluminous skirt) showed some themes across this collection, all seen in this dress: tiny belts, flowing cape-like backs, pockets, sparkle everywhere. I can’t quite imagine a life in which one might wear, or even afford, a gown like this — but it’s lovely to look at, like a breathtaking watercolor in a gallery that you know you’d never take home.
