Fit & Fun

Yard work burns calories, and the West Duwamish Greenbelt is one big yard — at almost 500 acres.

It’s home to frogs, hawks, bald eagles and other animals, and provides a touch of wilderness within the city.

Nature Consortium is holding a work party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 26, and promises volunteers some “ fun, hands-on conservation work,” which will mainly involve removing invasive weeds, such as Himalayan blackberry and English ivy, from the greenbelt.

Yeah, it’s work, but in a beautiful place — and a musician will play for the volunteers, the Nature Consortium says. Volunteers also will learn about the local ecosystem and how to identify native vs. nonnative plants.

Registration is required at naturec.org/volunteer.

Fit & Fun is a weekly notice about active recreational opportunities in the Greater Seattle area. To suggest a future item, contact Richard Seven: rseven@seattletimes.
