We’ll take a look back at the Apple Cup each day this week.

Today: Working overtime

Four of the past 17 Apple Cups have gone to overtime. But history says it won’t happen again Friday at Husky Stadium. All four of the overtime games in the series have been played in Pullman (each team has won twice).

Nov. 23, 2012: WSU 31, Washington 28 (OT). The Cougars rallied from 18 points down to win last year in Mike Leach’s first Apple Cup, snapping an eight-game WSU losing streak.

Nov. 22, 2008: WSU 16, Washington 13 (2 OT). The Huskies completed their 0-12 season two weeks later with a loss at California in Tyrone Willingham’s final game. For the Cougars, it was the second win of coach Paul Wulff’s dismal first season. The Cougars allowed 58 points or more six times that season and were shut out in three games.

Nov. 23, 2002: Washington 29, WSU 26 (3 OT). The Cougars came into the game 9-1 and ranked No. 3. The Huskies were 6-5, on their way to a 7-6 record in Rick Neuheisel’s final season. It is the last time both teams had a winning record in the game. The game ended on a controversial play, when a pass by WSU quarterback Matt Kegel was ruled a lateral and fumble recovery by the Huskies.

Nov. 23, 1996: Washington 31, WSU 24 (OT). The Huskies’ victory was the ninth of the season for Jim Lambright’s team. The Cougars ended the year with four straight losses and a 5-6 record.
