Alabama No. 1 in preseason coaches’ poll

Alabama is No. 1 in the USA Today preseason coaches’ poll.
The Crimson Tide was an overwhelming choice when the poll was released Thursday, receiving 58 of 62 first-place votes. Ohio State was second and received three first-place votes. Oregon is No. 3, Stanford is No. 4 and Georgia is No. 5. Texas A&M, ranked No. 6, received the other first-place vote.
There were five Pac-12 teams in the top 25. UCLA was 21st, USC 24th and Oregon State 25th.
Washington received three points, putting the Huskies in a tie for 43rd. Boise State, which Washington plays on Aug. 31 in its season opener, is ranked 19th.
The preseason AP poll has not been released.
• Oklahoma quarterback Kendal Thompson broke his right foot in practice and is expected to be out until early in the regular season. Thompson was competing with Blake Bell and Trevor Knight for the starting job.
• Dick Kazmaier, a Princeton halfback who won the Heisman Trophy in 1951 but rejected a career in the NFL saying he had achieved all he wanted in the sport and could make more money in business, died Thursday in Boston. He was 82.
The cause was heart and lung disease, said Bob Ruxin, president of Kazmaier’s company, Kazmaier Associates, an investment and financial consulting business with a special interest in sports.
