Washington at LSU: Game at a glance
The Huskies visit Baton Rouge for the first time since 1983, looking for a huge upset over the third-ranked Tigers.
Washington (1-0); LSU (1-0) Time: 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium
TV: ESPN Radio: KJR-AM 950 The line: LSU by 23 ½
The setup: After a sluggish opening win over San Diego State, the Huskies now get one of their biggest tests of the season against an LSU team rated No. 3 in both major polls. The Tigers are prohibitive favorites, but the Huskies hope to show they can compete with the elite teams in the nation.
Key matchup: UW's defensive front vs. LSU's running game. LSU's offensive line averages 322 pounds and will try to wear down Washington up front, as it has many other opponents the last few years — LSU averaged 202 yards rushing last year. Expect the Huskies to try to counter with some bigger lineups up front and lots of rotating.
What to expect: As noted, LSU figures to test the Huskies on the ground until UW stops it, likely mixing in some play-action passes and taking more deep shots than it did in its opener. UW will try lots of quick-hitting plays on offense to negate LSU's pass rush and try to get one-on-one matchups with its receivers against some young LSU DBs.
Injuries: UW — OUT: RB Jesse Callier (knee), OT Ben Riva (forearm), DE Hau'oli Jamora (knee), RB Deontae Cooper (knee), LB Nate Fellner (foot), WR James Johnson (wrist), LB Jamaal Kearse (leg); PROBABLE: CB Greg Ducre (foot) probable. LSU — OUT: LT Chris Faulk (knee); PROBABLE: RB Spencer Ware (thigh).
Notes: This will be the third game between the two. LSU won the previous meetings, 40-14 in 1983 at LSU and 31-23 in Seattle in 2009. The latter was the first for Steve Sarkisian as Washington's coach. ... This is UW's first game at an SEC school since the 1983 visit to LSU. ... Washington last beat an SEC team when it toppled Florida 34-7 in the 1989 Freedom Bowl. UW is 2-9 all-time against current SEC teams. ...
Upset brewing? The Huskies have pulled off some big upsets during the Sarkisian era. On paper, this is a tougher task. But UW knows the formula — create some turnovers and cash in, play stout defense, and make big plays down the stretch.
Prediction: LSU 43, UW 20
