Washington topped Northwest rivals and secured a verbal commitment from Rainier Beach High star Dejounte Murray, the No. 1 basketball recruiting prospect in the state.

Murray wrote on his Twitter account: “I am excited to announce I will be attending the University of Washington. #GoDawgs #206.”

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard also considered Gonzaga, Oregon, California and UNLV.

Murray is a consensus four-star prospect, according to the top recruiting sites. Scout.com ranks him 46th nationally while ESPN.com has him 49th on its top 100 list. He’s 78th on Rivals.com’s top 150 list.

After recent recruiting disappointments, Washington coach Lorenzo Romar admitted the program changed tactics and now works to secure early commitments.

The Huskies have already landed Marquese Chriss, a four-star forward from Pleasant Grove High in Elk Grove, Calif., and three-star guard David Crisp, who played with Murray at Rainier Beach.

Players in the 2015 recruiting class can sign binding scholarship papers as early as November.

“All three players complement each other well,” Scout.com recruiting analyst Josh Gershon wrote. “Crisp is a combo guard that will be a big time three-point shooter in Seattle, opening up the perimeter defense for Murray to be at his best as a slasher. Inside will be Chriss, an elite leaper who can score on putbacks or facing up as a shooter.

“While Washington’s coaching staff isn’t done in 2015, this class is already its best on paper since 2010, when it had three four-star prospects in Terrence Ross, Aziz N’Diaye and Desmond Simmons.”

Murray, who has a 6-foot-9 wingspan, just might be the cornerstone in the 2015 class.

As a junior last season, he nearly averaged a triple-double (18 points, 11.5 rebounds and 8.0 assists) on a star-studded Rainier Beach team that won the Class 3A state title and compiled a 29-1 record. The Vikings’ only loss was in the first round of the season-ending Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament in New York.

Murray put up some eye-popping games last season, including a 33-point, 30-rebound performance against West Seattle. He was the only non-senior selected to The Seattle Times’ boys all-area team.
