LONG BEACH, Calif. — Washington mounted a big second-half comeback Sunday but fell just short, losing 71-62 to Long Beach State.
The Huskies (2-1) had a sluggish start and could not overcome a big early deficit to drop their first game of the season.
Long Beach State (2-2) spent a lot of effort denying the ball to star guard Jazmine Davis, which seemed to frustrate the Huskies offense.
The 49ers led 40-26 at halftime and pushed their advantage to 20 points with 14:16 to play before the Huskies started their comeback.
Freshman Talia Walton scored nine straight Washington points and finished with a team-high 19, including three three-pointers. Aminah Williams had 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Kristi Kingma, who had 10 points, hit a three to cap a 24-6 run and the Huskies trailed just 57-55.
However, the 49ers scored seven straight points and the lead was back to nine with under two minutes to play. Long Beach made its free throws from there and closed out the win.
The 49ers also made 10 threes to six for the Huskies.
Alex Sanchez led the 49ers with 18 points.
Washington travels to Wisconsin to face the Badgers (2-1) on Wednesday. Wisconsin spent the past few days in Washington, losing to Gonzaga and beating Washington State.
