Washington pitcher Tyler Davis was among 21 semifinalists for the 37th Golden Spikes Award Tuesday.

Fans can help get Davis on the list of finalists for the Golden Spikes Award by voting online at http://web.usabaseball.com/goldenspikes/vote.jsp?DB_OEM_ID=30200. Voting continues through Friday.

The junior right-hander from Mountain View, Calif., is 10-2 with a 1.75 earned-run average in 14 games.

The Huskies finished second in the Pac-12 and are headed to the Oxford, Miss. Regional of the NCAA baseball championships.

Gonzaga’s Meikle leaves program

Gonzaga sophomore-to-be Luke Meikle has been granted his release from the men’s basketball program.

“Luke has decided to pursue other opportunities. We support his decision and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” coach Mark Few said.

Meikle, from Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, appeared in 15 games for the Bulldogs as a freshman, averaging 0.9 ppg and 0.7 rpg.

Note

Wayne Phipps has been named the director of cross country/track and field programs at Washington State, beginning July 1.

Phipps will be the 15th coach to take the reins of the Cougar men’s program and the second coach for the combined men’s and women’s program at WSU. He takes over for Rick Sloan, who announced his retirement from WSU last fall and is slated to complete his coaching duties at the end of the current track season.

Phipps, 45, has been Idaho’s director and track and field/cross country for the past four seasons and has been with the Vandals program for the past 19 years.
