No. 6 UW women's golf team disappointed with 17th-place NCAA finish

No. 6 Washington finished off the NCAA championships with its low round of the event on a good day for scoring at Tulsa Country Club, but the Huskies fell to 17th after a 6-over 286 for a four-day total of 47-over 1,167.

TULSA, Okla. – A very good season came to a disappointing end Friday for the Washington women’s golf team.

No. 6 Washington finished off the NCAA championships with its low round of the event on a good day for scoring at Tulsa Country Club, but the Huskies fell to 17th after a 6-over 286 for a four-day total of 47-over 1,167.

“It was frustrating. We are going to need to do some soul-searching and figure it out,” said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “Really, there were so many things that we did well this year, I don’t think anyone saw this coming. I don’t know where we failed them or what we didn’t do and should have.”

Duke won the team title with a 10-over 1,130, two shots ahead of USC. The Trojans’ Doris Chen won the individual title by two shots with a 6-under 274.

Washington’s SooBin Kim shot a 2-under 68 Friday to finish tied for 16th at 5 over. She was one of three Huskies making their NCAA tournament debuts, and only senior Kelli Bowers had played in the team portion.

“We might have underestimated their lack of experience a little bit, but they are all such seasoned players,” said Mulflur. “The goal isn’t just to get here, but to do well.”

UW men delayed

The first day of the NCAA championships never got started for No. 8 Washington. Heavy rains suspended play for the day with only a few teams having teed off. UW was scheduled for the last tee times and had their entire round suspended by rain. Play will resume on Saturday morning and the teams will play as many holes as possible at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan.
