Washington sophomore Jonathan Sanders was tied for second and senior Trevor Simsby was tied for fifth after the second round of the NCAA men’s golf regional in Raleigh, N.C., leading UW into second place as a team entering Saturday’s final round.

Fifth-ranked Georgia Tech, the top seed at the 13-team regional, held a 16-shot lead over No. 8 UW with a score of 28-under 540. The top five teams in the regional advance to next week’s NCAA championships.

Washington was at 12-under 556, followed by Kentucky at 8 under, Texas A&M at 3 under and Florida State at 1 under.

“We played really solid today,” said UW coach Matt Thurmond. “I have felt this way after almost every round this season. We played pretty well, but someone went out and played better than us. Georgia Tech is just on fire. We are playing with them, so we have seen it in action.”

Sanders shot a 5-under 67 in the second and is in a four-way tie for second place, one shot behind Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech.

“Jonathan is hitting the ball really well, but the biggest thing is his putting,” Thurmond said. “He has a very complete game, but now is making a ton of putts. When you are making 15-footers for par, it is really going to help your confidence grow.”

Simsby was at 5 under and UW’s Cheng-Tsung Pan and Corey Pereira were tied for 18th at even par.
