In a photo finish, the No. 2 Washington men’s varsity eight crew defeated top-ranked California on Saturday morning in Redwood Shores, Calif.

It was a tight battle from start to finish, the boats neck-and-neck the whole way down the course. In the last 250 meters, it looked like the Bears might take the Schoch Cup back from UW, with what looked like a three-seat lead.

But over the last 50 meters, UW surged and hit the finish line in 5:41.84, .56 seconds in front of the Bears.

As the winners of the race, Washington won the Schoch Cup for the eighth straight year. UW has a 72-30-1 lead in the all-time series between the two rivals.

It was the first loss of the season for California’s varsity eight.

The Huskies also got close wins in the freshman eight and the second varsity eight. Cal won the varsity four.

“It doesn’t get any better than this. We had photo finishes in three of the four races,” UW coach Michael Callahan said. “It was number one versus number two, and they were great races.”

UW women lose

No. 2 California beat No. 7 Washington in the women’s varsity eight at Redwood Shores, but the Huskies did get wins in the varsity four and freshman eight.

In the varsity eight race, it was close most of the way until California pulled away late to win by just more than three seconds at 6:34.17.
