After winning their third straight national championship earlier this month, the Husky crew is returning to the water in grand fashion.

Two Husky crews will compete in the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames on Wednesday. For the first time in more than 30 years, Washington has entered its varsity 8 boat in the Grand Challenge Cup, the top race at the 174-year old regatta.

The Huskies will contend with the Leander Club and Molesey Boat Club from England and the Wojskowy Klub Sportowy Zawisza and Regionalne Towarzystwo Wioslarskie Lotto of Poland for the Cup, which the Huskies have won only once before in their history — in 1977.

The Husky men’s second varsity 8 will contend for the Ladies’ Challenge Plate with seven other crews. UW last won the Ladies’ Challenge Plate in 2003.

The draw for the event will take place Saturday.

Men’s basketball

• Gonzaga will face South Alabama on Dec. 14 in the 11th annual Battle in Seattle at KeyArena, it was announced Friday.

The event will mark the third all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Zags winning each of the previous contests. The teams last faced each other in 1999 in the Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City, Iowa, with the Zags defeating the Jaguars 80-63.
