Jose "Keno" Gandara, an assistant coach the past eight seasons at Washington, was named head coach at the University of Miami.

Gandara is a native of Puerto Rico, and the move will take him and his wife Stephanie and son Lucas closer to family.

Heavily involved in opponent scouting, Gandara was in charge of Washington's blocking. This season, the Huskies led the NCAA in blocks per set (3.36). UW's Amanda Gil led the nation with 1.82 blocks per set.

Curling

Team Washington from Seattle's Granite Curling Club — Lyle Sieg, Miyo Konno, Steve Lundeen and Jennifer Westhagen — defeated Connecticut 10-3 to improve to 6-1 in round-robin play in the mixed national championships in Willmar, Minn. With two more games to play Thursday, Sieg's team remained in first place and clinched at least a tiebreaker spot for the playoffs, which start Friday.
