For Washington guard Kristi Kingma, making free throws is like a mathematician counting to 10
Kingma made three free throws with four seconds remaining to send the game into overtime and was 15 of 15 overall from the line in Washington's 81-77 win over Oregon State on Friday.
"When you're a redshirt senior and you're 10-years older than everyone else, and you step up to the line with the chance to send it to overtime — if you don't want to embrace that and step up and hit those shots then I think you're in the wrong sport," Kingma said.
Kingma was fouled attempting a three-pointer in regulation with four seconds left and her team trailing by three. With Alaska Airlines Arena at a hush, the first free throw hit nothing but net. She paused before the second and drained it, too.
OSU coach Scott Rueck called a timeout before the third. But Kingma sank that to tie the score at 70.
In overtime, Kingma nailed a jumper and made the final four free throws of the game to cap the UW win.
Kingma set a UW record for most consecutive free throws in a game. Amy Mickelson (1989), Giuliana Mendiola (2004) and Kayla Burt (2005) each made 10 of 10 free throws to share the record.
"Fortunately, we had the right person at the line," said UW coach Kevin McGuff of Kingma, who finished with 29 points. "She put us on her back there for a while to put us back in the game and then, ultimately, into overtime."
UW held a 16-point lead in the first half despite playing without floor leader Jazmine Davis, the team's leading scorer (20.6). The sophomore point guard suffered a concussion midway through the second half of a win against Washington State on Sunday. She'll be re-evaluated on Saturday.
Rueck used a bigger lineup to chip at UW's lead.
Down 38-31 at the break, Oregon State used a 20-6 run to open the second half and build a 51-44 after a layup by senior reserve Patricia Bright. UW trailed 68-63 with 1:32 left in the game after a three-pointer by OSU junior guard Alyssa Martin.
Then Kingma took over. She countered missed three-pointers with made free throws while freshman guard Heather Corral added a layin and grabbed a key steal to help set up the final play.
Gibson fouled Kingma on a three-point attempt, shouting "No!" in disbelief at the call.
"We just had to find a way," said forward Talia Walton, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
"Find a Way" was the coaches' mantra for the Huskies this week. It could be used for the entire season.
Injuries. Deficits. Shooting lulls. Washington has found a way to overcome most of it this season.
UW (13-5, 5-2 Pac-12) and No. 19 UCLA (14-4, 5-2) are tied for third in the conference.
Washington's matchup with Oregon on Sunday marks the end of the first-round of Pac-12 competition, with UW playing No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 California, No. 20 Colorado and Utah once apiece this season.
"With Jaz out, these are two huge games," Kingma said of the weekend lineup. "Especially if we want to reach the (NCAA) tournament, which is our goal."
