Washington shoots horribly. Opponents gather easy turnovers. Deficits grow.
Then, redshirt senior Kristi Kingma nails a three-pointer and everything seems to click. The guard cued another spurt on Tuesday against Pepperdine at Alaska Airlines Arena.
UW was shooting 29.4 percent from the field when Kingma's deep three-pointer pulled the Huskies even at 19. That propelled them to a double-digit halftime lead before they won going away, 70-51.
"We kind of came out thinking we could kind of cruise through the first half and that obviously wasn't the case," said Kingma, who finished with 17 points. "About halfway through, we started hitting some shots and got on a run from there.
"A three is a little bit more of a momentum booster even though it's only one more point. We all agree that any time anyone hits a three-pointer we all get fired up. Hitting a three along with getting some big boards by Aminah (Williams) is what spurred the offense."
Williams' inside play definitely complemented Kingma. She tipped passes and collected 11 rebounds in the first half. Williams finished the game with 17 points and 15 boards for her third consecutive double-digit rebounding game. Jazmine Davis also scored 17.
"I talked to (UW assistant) coach (Mike) Neighbors after the Seattle U game about how I can get more rebounds," said Williams. "He practically just said it's a mentality that you have to have. I'm trying to get that mentality of going to the boards more."
The Huskies (4-1) opened the second half with a 12-7 run to secure control of the game. The team shot 64 percent after the break and outrebounded the Waves (2-4) 43-24.
"I didn't like our start at all, concentration or energy," UW coach Kevin McGuff said of the first half. "Once we got that together at the 10-minute mark on, I thought we played a really good game."
The Huskies continue to play with a depleted roster because of injuries, and guard Kellie McCann-Smith being away from the team due to a personal issue. Freshman Heather Corral is no longer wearing a brace for her broken right wrist, and McGuff expects her to return before Pac-12 play.
Reserve Deborah Meeks (knee) is expected to return in December. Forward Talia Walton left the game in the second half because of a right leg injury that isn't expected to be serious.
"With the amount of players that we play, it's going to be a struggle to stay composed throughout a game," Kingma said. "That can be on your mind, 'Oh, we only have eight bodies, I've got to save myself.' But coach makes it clear that we can definitely win with eight players."
