As a high-school running back, Joe Steele rushed for 3,814 yards and 44 touchdowns and helped Bishop Blanchet win the 1974 AAA (now Class 4A) state championship.
After graduating in 1976, he went on to a standout career with the Huskies from 1976-79 and helped the University of Washington win the 1978 Rose Bowl.
At UW, he set the single-season rushing record (1,111 yards) in 1978 (held until 1989) and also the career rushing record (3,168 yards) in 1979 (held until in 1994).
During his senior season, Steele was an All-Pac-10 Conference running back and an honorable mention All-American.
He was inducted in the Husky Hall of Fame in 1996.
