MIDWAY, Utah — University of Washington golfer Cheng-Tsung Pan advanced to the match-play round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship on Wednesday, while his UW teammate Chris Williams fell in the round of 64 to former Huskies assistant coach Alex Williams.

Pan beat Shane Smith 3 and 2 in the first round to move on at Soldier Hollow Golf Course. Pan only trailed for one hole to Smith, who just completed his senior season at Illinois-Wesleyan. The match was squared through six holes before a Smith bogey on No. 7 gave Pan a lead he never relinquished.

Pan will face Xander Schauffele, the 2012 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year from Long Beach State, on Thursday.

Chris Williams had a 2-up lead after 11 holes in his match, but Alex Williams birdied three holes down the stretch to turn the tide.

"I just couldn't make the putts when I needed to," said Chris Williams.

Other golf

Top seeded Carl Jonson of Bainbridge Island posted a 3-and-2 victory over Dan Whitaker of Ellensburg to advance to the round of 32 at the 111th Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.

In all, seven of the top 10 seeds advanced, including No. 2 seed Tanner Higham of Shelley, Idaho; No. 3 Dylan Maine of Spokane; No. 4 Charlie Mroz of Woodinville; No. 7 Gregg LaVoie of Kennewick; and No. 8 Preston Valder of Yorba Linda, Calif.

Incoming Washington freshman Tyler Salsbury dropped a 3-and-2 decision to Oregon golfer Rak Cho.

Rowing

The U.S. men's four boat, which includes Will Gillis of Seattle, finished second in its heat to advance to the semifinals at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania. The Americans finished in 6 minutes, 7.04 seconds, less than a second behind first-place Great Britain.

Seattle's Anna Kaminiski and partner Rosie Popa finished third in their heat of the women's pair and will race in the repechage.
