Washington women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff spotted Danish forward Mathilde Gilling on the Huskies' European tour last summer. On Monday, McGuff announced that Gilling will join the team next season.
Gilling, who is 6 feet 3, will add depth to a team that lost senior post players Regina Rogers, Mackenzie Argens and Mollie Williams. With those three finishing their eligibility after a 20-14 season and forward Marjorie Heard transferring, the Huskies needed help inside beyond returnee Talia Walton and incoming freshman Katie Collier.
"(Mathilde) brings a lot of basketball savvy and athleticism to the frontcourt," said McGuff, who spotted the 19-year-old during UW's tour in August. "I was impressed when we saw her ... and felt right away she'd be a positive fit in our system."
Gilling is playing in China for a Danish U-23 team. She has competed for the Horsholm Basketball Club, which finished second in the Danish League last season, averaging 10 points and seven rebounds. She was on the roster in 2010 when the team won the national title.
Gilling's brother, Jonathan, is a sophomore forward at Arizona State.
