The Washington freshmen opened the Henley Royal Regatta with a resounding win over Manchester University by a shade over three lengths on Wednesday morning in the United Kingdom.

The Huskies finished in 7 minutes, 20 seconds on the 2,112-meter course in suburban London. With the win, the Huskies advanced to face England's Reading University in the second round.

Golf

Jeff Coston of Blaine and Corey Prugh of Spokane earned spots in the PGA Championship in August at Kiawah Island in South Carolina at qualifying in Seaside, Calif. Coston placed sixth at 2-under 286, and Prugh tied for seventh at 1-under 287.

Megan Haase of Spokane and Karinn Dickinson of Mukilteo are tied atop the leaderboard at 5-over 151 at the Washington State Women's Amateur Championship, and defending champion Ginny Burkey of Fircrest holds a one-shot lead entering the final round of the Washington State Senior Women's Amateur at Rainier Golf and Country Club.

• A triathlete from Seattle has died after suffering a medical emergency during the swimming leg of the Ironman Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) on Sunday.

Kootenai County officials identified the man as 44-year-old Sean Murphy of Seattle.
