Live chat with Lorenzo Romar
Highlights of a live chat with Washington basketball coach Lorenzo Romar.
Latest from the Husky Football & Basketball blogs
Lorenzo Romar, Washington men's basketball coach, talked about his Huskies dream team, his top moment at UW and the current team in a live chat Thursday with readers:
Q: Can you pick a starting five of the players you've coached at Washington?
Romar: Spencer Hawes, Jon Brockman, Brandon Roy ... and I'm not sure after that.
Q: Fastest player on the team this year?
Romar: Tony Wroten Jr. or C.J. Wilcox.
Q: With so many new freshmen on the team, how is the team doing so far in learning your defense?
Romar: Right now, patience is required.
Q: How big of a factor is your faith when you coach?
Romar: It's a huge factor. I try to live out my faith not just on Sundays in church, but moment by moment. So in whatever I do.
Q: What is your top moment as a Huskies coach?
Romar: Probably winning the Pac-10 championship outright in 2009.
Q: Is being able to find points in the paint a concern for you?
Romar: Sometimes we have the misconception that the only guys who score in the paint are 6 feet 9 and above. You can still score points in the paint with guys who post up and guys that slash to the basket.
Q: What is the biggest challenge our team needs to overcome this year in order to be successful?
Romar: Establishing a team identity of toughness, defending and rebounding.
Q: Can you give an update on the health of the team?
Romar: We've suffered some injuries, setbacks, but slowly but surely everyone's making their way back. We anticipate everyone being healthy by the first game, with the exception of Scott Suggs.
Q: What does the team eat when they go to your house for dinner?
Romar: My wife's gumbo. This unbelievable enchilada dish that she makes. Along with my own personal request, which is mandatory for any meal, her banana pudding.
Q: Who wins a three-point shootout between Suggs and Wilcox?
Romar: Suggs had the best percentage in games last year. C.J. has the deeper range. I'd like to take my chances with either one of them shooting the basketball from three.
Q: How often do you hang out with Steve Sarkisian?
Romar: Whenever I get a chance. He's a great guy, funny guy.
Q: Will the purple sport coat be making an appearance this season?
Romar: There have been some critics out there that feel that when I wear it, our winning rate has not been as good. But I am not going to give in to peer pressure, and I will still wear it.
Q: Who is the best high-school basketball player you ever saw?
Romar: It would have to be Kevin Garnett. Oh, I forgot, LeBron James. Oh, one more. Kobe Bryant.
Q: Which recruit that you were real close to getting do you most wish you had?
Romar: Jrue Holiday, James Harden and Marvin Williams.
