What's next for Isaiah Thomas?
Minutes after Washington's 86-83 defeat to North Carolina, the 5-foot-9 junior guard was asked repeatedly about his immediate future.
Will he forgo his final year of college and declare for the NBA or return for his senior season?
Thomas gave varying answers following the NCAA tournament loss.
On one occasion he said, "Now is not the time for that question."
Another time he replied: "I'm coming back."
Minutes later he said: "We'll see."
Last week coach Lorenzo Romar encouraged Thomas to test the NBA waters, but added he hadn't talked specifically with the Husky star guard about his immediate future.
The Huskies are planning on Thomas returning.
"Next year we should have a solid senior class with me, Scott (Suggs) and of course Isaiah," forward Darnell Gant said. "He doesn't have to work on being a leader. He's been a captain this year and will be again next year."
Thomas is a three-time all-Pac-10 selection and the reigning two-time conference tournament Most Outstanding Player. He ranks sixth on UW's all-time scoring list with 1,721 points and will own the record if he maintains his 16.4 scoring average.
After the game, Thomas tweeted his plans to return.
"Thanks 2 all the people who believed in us," he wrote. "I will be back NXT yr so don't worry."
No review necessary
Replays show Venoy Overton's midcourt heave near the end of the game sailed out of bounds with more than a second remaining.
Romar asked the game officials to review the play and was told "that they had already checked."
Washington was given just five-tenths of a second, which forced Isaiah Thomas to hurry a long jump shot.
After the game, Doug Shows, the officials' crew chief, released this statement and supported the official's decision:
"There's always a lag time between the time the play occurs and the whistle is blown and the clock stops," Shows said in the statement. "By rule, the clock stops when the whistle blows. We were asked to check the time, and we verified that it was accurate with the standby official and the clock operator."
Sick coach on the sideline
North Carolina coach Roy Williams felt sick Sunday, but the win made him feel a lot better.
"Today was a tough day," he said. "I didn't feel very good. Told the kids to take care of their old man and they did a nice job of that."
Williams won his 34th NCAA tournament game.
• Romar changed the lineup once again and started sophomore center Aziz N'Diaye and junior guard Scott Suggs in place of forward Darnell Gant and freshman guard Terrence Ross. It was the 11th time Washington switched starters this season.
• What did UNC forward Tyler Zeller and the Huskies have in common? Both attempted seven free throws and made every attempt. The Tar Heels were 18 of 23 at the line and attempted 16 more foul shots than Washington.
• Matthew Bryan-Amaning has appeared in 136 games in his UW career and tied Quincy Pondexter for the most in team history.
• UNC freshman guard Kendall Marshall nearly had more assists than the entire UW squad. He had 14 and the Huskies had 17.
