Information in this article, originally published May 31, was corrected June 03. A previous version of this story contained an error. A basketball tournament hosted by the University of Washington will include the University of Northern Iowa, not Northern Iowa University as reported in a Wednesday story. Former coach Greg McDermott left Northern Iowa to coach Iowa State, not Iowa, as reported in the story.
The University of Northern Iowa, a consistent power in the Missouri Valley Conference of late, has been added to the Basketball Travelers Classic to be hosted by the University of Washington Nov. 12-14.
Northern Iowa is 65-31 the past three years, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament each season. Last year, UNI finished 23-10 after losing to Georgetown 54-49 in the first round of the tournament.
UNI made news early in the season by beating Iowa and also won at LSU, 54-50, victories that helped the Panthers finish with an RPI of 35.
Northern Iowa will return three of its top six scorers but will have a new coach in Ben Jacobson, who replaces Greg McDermott, who left to become the coach at Iowa State.
Pepperdine has already been confirmed as a participant in the tournament, a round-robin affair in which each team will play the other, each playing three games. UW still needs to add one more team for the tournament.
