UW Men's Basketball

Roy named Pac-10 Player of Week

Seattle Times staff reporter

Brandon Roy wanted to be a Pac-10 Player of the Week again.

Not so much for the personal recognition — not that it hurts — but because of what it would mean about his team.

"I've noticed that the award always goes to a player whose team won both games," said Roy, a senior guard for the Washington Huskies.

That's exactly what happened as the Huskies got their weekend sweep of USC and UCLA, and Roy on Monday was named Pac-10 Player of the Week.

It is the second time a Husky has been honored this season — Bobby Jones got the award after UW beat the same two teams in L.A. — and the second time Roy has been honored in his career. He also got it as a sophomore after Washington won at Arizona State and Arizona.

Roy averaged 22.5 points and hit 50 percent of his shots last week. He grabbed nine rebounds against USC and handed out seven assists against UCLA. He also helped shut down UCLA point guard Jordan Farmar in Saturday's 70-67 win over the Bruins, blocking a last-second three-point attempt.

Roy is leading the Pac-10 in scoring in conference games at 22.6 and has scored 20 or more in five straight games, a streak that began after he had down games at UCLA (10 points) and against Oregon State (eight).

UW on ESPN2

The Huskies will be featured on two episodes of ESPN2's "The Season — College Basketball" series tonight. A film crew followed the Huskies for two weeks, including the trips to Stanford and Washington State. Two 30-minute programs are scheduled to air tonight at 9 and 9:30 on ESPN2. The second episode will also air Feb. 24 at 1:30 a.m.

"I feel really good going out there right now," Roy said. "I hit a little bump against UCLA and Oregon State, but since then I've felt in a good groove. My energy level's been pretty high."

Roy's stellar play of late not only is helping his candidacy for postseason awards such as Pac-10 Player of the Year, but also his NBA draft status. The Web site NBAdraft.net had Roy listed as the 18th pick in the first round in a recent mock draft.

Washington is 18-5 overall and 7-5 in Pac-10 play and improved to No. 20 in The Associated Press poll and No. 40 in the RPI. The Huskies play at Oregon on Thursday.

Note

• Roy also was named one of 30 midseason candidates for the Naismith Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Gonzaga's Adam Morrison also is on the list.
