Is it time to paint the exterior of your home?

If some of the old paint is peeling, the current color has lost its luster, or you’re just in the mood for a change, read on.

If you think about it, only a few people get to see the inside of your home.

But everyone who drives or walks past your house sees the exterior. The color and condition of your home makes a statement about you to all who pass by.

So, how do we pick the right color or colors for the outside of our home?

We’ve all seen houses with bright and interesting colors (think hot pink or deep purple).

But after a while, colors that are selected on a whim may no longer be pleasing to the owner. Instead, think and plan — and then think and plan again — before selecting exterior colors.

When choosing the perfect colors, think classic. Avoid anything too trendy and instead choose colors that have withstood the test of time.

Here are some color combinations to consider.

• Slate blue combines well with dusty red, and if you add some muted green tones you’ll have a serene look.

• Earthy tones are always good. Consider sunbaked adobe in terra cotta with desert sand. Add a hint of green for interest.

• Do you like green? How about an avocado green combined with amber? It’s a combination that looks sophisticated and contemporary.

If there is a color you love and have a swatch of it in a rug, pillow or even an article of clothing, take it to your local paint or home store and have them match it.

To be sure you love the color, ask them for a sample so you can test it on the house. Then live with it for a day or two — and check how the color looks at different times of the day — before making a final decision.
