Q: Our master bathroom has had a shower curtain since we moved in. It's a "shower only" stall and we've changed curtains over the years, but now I want to install a glass door and finally be rid of the curtain. I'm pretty handy, but could use some help with choosing the correct shower door. Can you walk me through the basics of getting a new shower stall door?

— Tim, Texas

A: Upgrading to a glass shower door can add beauty and value to a bathroom, especially if you make good choices. First, decide on your door type. Larger shower stalls usually use sliding-type doors, while standard shower stalls usually use swinging-hinge-type doors.

Correct size does matter. Make sure you measure the stall height, and take two width measurements — one for the top of the stall width and one for the bottom of the stall width. This will help you get the correct door size even if your walls are out of plumb.

The door-frame finish should match your bathroom. Aluminum frame finishes can include bronze, nickel, brass and silver.

Also, choose the right glass to add that touch of class. Aside from clear glass, textured and patterned glass can include hammered, pebble, rain or lace.

Finally, look for a shower door that's easy to install. Some quick-install type shower doors require no drilling of the shower walls at all.
