Ferry breakdown slows evening run

The state ferry Tacoma, adrift off Bainbridge Island after losing power on its midday run, is assisted by the tug Pacific Knight. The ferry was brought to Winslow to offload cars and 405 passengers this afternoon. Ferry workers called today a "nightmare," and officials urged travelers on the Bainbridge Island-Seattle run to change their plans because of crowding.

Amgen will shut operations in Seattle, Bothell

The biotechnology giant, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., said planned job cuts companywide will amount to more than 2,400 people. It employs about 710 locally.
