Boston Bruins eliminate Detroit in 5 games

The Boston Bruins, who had the best regular-season record in the league, advanced to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs by beating Detroit 4-1 in a best-of-seven series.

BOSTON – The regular season wasn’t much of a struggle for the Boston Bruins, and neither was their best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Detroit Red Wings.

Tuukka Rask made 31 saves Saturday, and the defending East champions eliminated the Red Wings with a 4-2 victory in Game 5.

After finishing the regular season with the best record in the league, the Bruins advanced to the conference semifinals against Montreal.

Loui Eriksson and Milan Lucic also scored for Boston. Jarome Iginla added an empty-netter.

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit.

At Penguins 3, Blue Jackets 1

Jussi Jokinen scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Pittsburgh beat Columbus to take a 3-2 lead in their East first-round series.

At Avalanche 4, Wild 3 (OT)

Nathan MacKinnon scored 3:27 into overtime after P.A. Parenteau tied the score late in regulation, helping Colorado beat Minnesota for a 3-2 lead in their West first-round series.

Kings 3, at Sharks 0

Jonathan Quick made 30 saves as Los Angeles reduced San Jose’s lead in their West first-round series to 3-2.
