The Detroit Red Wings spoiled the big party in Arizona, overpowering the Phoenix Coyotes 6-1 in Game 7 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series Tuesday night.
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Detroit Red Wings spoiled the big party in Arizona, routing the Phoenix Coyotes 6-1 in Game 7 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series Tuesday night.
Fifth-seeded Detroit will face top-seeded San Jose in a best-of-seven West semifinal series. The Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks meet in the other West semifinal series.
Pavel Datsyuk scored twice in a span of less than two minutes and Nicklas Lidstrom had two goals a day shy of his 40th birthday for the Red Wings. Detroit, a Stanley Cup finalist the past two seasons, won in Arizona for the third time in four games in the series.
The Red Wings bombarded goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov from the start, outshooting Phoenix 50-33. Detroit scored four times in the second period en route to its first Game 7 victory on the road in 46 years.
