NHL Playoffs | Canucks win 3-2 in OT to sweep St. Louis

ST. LOUIS — Alex Burrows scored his second goal of the game with 18.9 seconds to go in overtime and Roberto Luongo made 47 saves to help the Vancouver Canucks complete a Western Conference first-round sweep of St. Louis with a 3-2 victory over the Blues on Tuesday night.

Kyle Wellwood also scored for the Canucks, who swept a best-of-seven playoff series for the first time in franchise history. Vancouver won a series before the seventh game for the first time in 12 tries since 1994.

The third-seeded Canucks are the first team to advance to the second round of this season's playoffs.

"We have a few guys banged up," said Luongo, who was so drained he got IV fluids after the game. "It's good that we're going to get the rest now and heal up and make sure we're ready to go when the next round starts."

Vancouver's Sami Salo, who had four points in the first three games, didn't play because of a groin injury. The Canucks scratched center Mats Sundin, who also has a groin injury, for the second consecutive game.

Brad Boyes and David Perron scored for the sixth-seeded Blues, who rallied from a two-goal, second-period deficit in Game 4 thanks to increased traffic around Luongo. But more power-play woes doomed St. Louis, which was 0 for 7 with the man advantage in the game and 1 for 24 in the series — including a four-minute double-minor midway through overtime.

"The one thing that killed us in the series is our power play," Blues forward Keith Tkachuk said. "We had opportunities throughout the series and we didn't capitalize. You've got to bring it up a notch and we didn't do that."

The Canucks were outshot 10-1 the first half of overtime. Burrows, whose first goal put Vancouver ahead 2-0, broke in alone on the right side and squeezed a wrist shot past goaltender Chris Mason to end the series. Mason made 33 saves.

Sharks 4, at Ducks 3

Patrick Marleau, a former Seattle Thunderbird, scored the go-ahead goal on a power play with 9:27 left and top-seeded San Jose beat eighth-seeded Anaheim to reduce the Ducks' lead in the West first-round series to 2-1.

Dan Boyle had two goals and an assist for the Sharks, who were outscored by a combined 5-2 in two losses in San Jose to start the series.

Red Wings 4, at Blue Jackets 1

Henrik Zetterberg scored twice and defending champion Detroit took a 3-0 lead in its West first-round series against seventh-seeded Columbus.

The first NHL playoff game at Nationwide Arena — in the Blue Jackets' 659th game — was a mammoth letdown for a franchise-record crowd of 19,219. The second-seeded Red Wings can advance to the conference semifinals with a victory Thursday.

Ex-Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Chris Osgood's shutout streak of 144 minutes, 27 seconds ended with 3:53 left when Columbus' R.J. Umberger scored.

At Hurricanes 4, Devils 3

Jussi Jokinen deflected in Dennis Seidenberg's slap shot with 0.2 seconds remaining in Game 4 and sixth-seeded Carolina evened its East first-round series with third-seeded New Jersey 2-2. The puck hit Jokinen's left skate and crossed the goal line in time.

Eric Staal, Ryan Bayda and Chad LaRose also scored for the Hurricanes, who blew a 3-0 lead but regrouped.

David Clarkson, Brian Gionta and Brendan Shanahan scored for the Devils.

Penguins 3, at Flyers 1

A sliding Sidney Crosby scored a goal that ricocheted off his skate, his midsection and into the back of the net to help fourth-seeded Pittsburgh beat fifth-seeded Philadelphia and take a 3-1 lead in the East first-round series.

Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury was sensational with 45 saves. Game 5 is Thursday in Pittsburgh.

• Goalie Dominik Hasek, 44, a six-time Vezina Trophy winner in the NHL, plans to come out of retirement to play for his former team in the Czech league. Hasek agreed to play for HC Moeller Pardubice next season.

"I'm really glad I could sign a deal with this club," Hasek said. "It's a club where I spent the most years."

Hasek played for Detroit last season and won his second Stanley Cup.
