SUMNER — University Prep coach Alec Duxbury dug deep to find something positive to share with his players after they fell to Quincy 1-0 in the state 1A boys soccer championship Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium.

“I cracked a joke about (second place) being the only trophy that we don’t have in the case,” said Duxbury, who in 20 years as coach has seen his U-Prep teams win four state titles (two boys, two girls) and two thirds (one each, boys and girls). “That made them smile a little bit.”

Quincy (16-7) pressured U-Prep (12-4-2) all day, outshooting the Pumas, 18-4. Francisco Alejandrez finally converted in the 46th minute, scoring from 12 yards out on a cross from Armondo Ortega.

U-Prep’s best chance came in the first half when Blaine Thompson sprinted after a forwarding pass and got behind Quincy keeper Gildardo Avila. But Thompson was a step away when the ball rolled over the end line just wide of the net.

“There were times when we were on and put them under pressure,” Duxbury said, “and there were times when we were slow to the ball. But the boys responded to everything I asked them to do. It’s still an extremely successful season.”

The win gives Quincy, near the state’s geographic center 30 miles east of Wenatchee, only its second state sports title, its first since winning a baseball crown in 1998. “This is a dream come true our community has been waiting for,” said coach Arturo Guerrero.

Players dedicated the victory to former coach Tom Turner, who started the school’s soccer program but then set aside coaching duties to focus on his fight with cancer.

1A third place

King’s 3, Chelan 0

Taylor Moe, Ryan Fransen and Alex Muri scored and Bret Matysik recorded seven saves for the shutout as the Knights (18-5-1) defeated the defending 1A champs (16-6-1) for third place.

The Knights played well after a tough loss Friday when a misplayed clearing kick gave University Prep an open-net goal in a 1-0 semifinal setback. It ended a 12-game King’s winning streak.

2A championship

Squalicum 4, Capital 0

Freshman Tyler Hughes scored two second-half goals and Zachary Wallace and Gabe Guidroz added two more as the Storm remained unbeaten (21-0-2) and won its first 2A state title since 2009. Capital (21-3) was outshot 17-2. Squalicum keeper Trenton Langer made just one save for the shutout.

2A third place

Toppenish 1, Sedro-Woolley 0

The Wildcats (13-5-1) used goals by Isaac Lopez and Eliseo Alcala to defeat the Cubs for the 2A third-place trophy. Isaac Swenson scored for Sedro-Woolley (15-6-3) in the 67th minute.
