It’s a good thing the Lakeside boys soccer team got two goals in the first 25 minutes.

Because most of the remaining 55 minutes were a dogfight.

Sophomore forward Sharif Kombo supplied both goals as seventh-ranked Lakeside fended off Ingraham, 2-1, on Friday night to win the Metro League championship match at Northeast Athletic Complex.

The Lions were fortunate to withstand constant offensive pressure from Ingraham in the final 25 minutes. The Rams’ last good chance was a header from Spencer Lyng off a corner kick, making Lakeside junior goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley save it.

“It was a little stressful back there, but I had faith in my guys and I knew they could pull it out,” said Lapsley, who leads one of Metro’s top defenses and helped preserve the lead.

Lakeside wrapped up its third consecutive Metro League title by dodging many Rams scoring chances in the second half.

Both teams have already qualified for Class 3A state, but for Ingraham this is a historical ride to state for the first time in school history.

Lakeside (12-2-2) plays a first-round Class 3A state tournament match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Ingraham High School against the West Central/Southwest bi-district (District 3/ 4) No. 4 seed.

Ingraham (10-4-4) plays in a first-round 3A state match either Tuesday or Wednesday versus the Northwest District No. 3 seed.

The Lions went ahead on goals by Kombo in the fourth and 25th minutes, his 12th and 13th goals of the spring.
