Prep athletes of the week
Jefferson’s Brandon Madsen, Tahoma’s Mia Corbin and the Bellevue girls golf team are high school athletes of the week.
Brandon Madsen, Jefferson boys soccer
You might call Madsen the Mad Scorer. He tied a school record held by the Sounders’ Lamar Neagle with six goals in an 8-1 win over Kentlake, and added an assist. He then had a hat trick and an assist to key a 5-1 victory over Kent-Meridian, giving him 17 goals and 10 assists on the year. “Brandon is a quiet, get-it-done player,” coach Dave Hanson said. “He never says much, just lets his work rate do the talking.”
Mia Corbin, Tahoma softball
The sophomore shortstop had a sizzling bat as the Bears racked up five more victories to improve to 18-0. She went 14 for 20 (a .700 average) with 10 runs scored, eight runs batted in and five stolen bases. “Mia has really hit her stride this spring,” coach Tom Milligan said. “She steps into the batter’s box with an extremely professional approach of getting on base to score runs or by driving in teammates.”
Bellevue girls golf
The Wolverines, coached by Tori Marcum, beat Mercer Island last Thursday, 226-237, to end the Islanders’ streak of dual-match victories at 75. It had been the longest current streak in the nation and ranked seventh all-time. Lauren Patrick shared medalist honors to lead the way, with Tiffany Huang and Alexis Choi close behind, tied for third. MI had not lost since 2007.
