High-school basketball fans will be treated to a jam-packed day of high-end matchups Monday as three local events highlight Martin Luther King Jr. Day: The Roy Foundation Presents Unity in the Community Hoop Showcase at Garfield High School, the King Holiday Hoopfest at Bellevue College and the King Showcase at the Showare Center
Here are some things to keep an eye on Monday:
Boys game of the day
Garfield and Franklin face off at 5 p.m. in the Unity in the Community Hoop Showcase. The old rivals played last season for the first time in four years, but this will be a precursor for many matchups to come, as reclassification will move Garfield back to the Metro League next season.
Girls game of the day
No. 1 Cleveland faces No. 7 Wilson in what promises to be a thrilling contest at 12:30 p.m. in the King Holiday Hoopfest. Cleveland has been too much for the Metro League to handle, limiting opponents to single-digits twice this season and scoring more than 70 in its last five games.
Story line to watch
Rainier Beach has not hidden its desire to win the national championship this year. Of course, a state title is an integral part of that, but the Vikings had one more national test to take care of this past weekend.
Rainier Beach beat Bishop O’Connell (Va.) 65-60 in the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., but will have little rest before its matchup against a tough O’Dea squad at 3 p.m. at Garfield High School.
Bellevue and Wilson face each other at 7:30 p.m. in the finale of the King Holiday Hoopfest at Bellevue College. The No. 3 Wolverines have been playing terrific basketball recently, but will run into a talented young squad in the No. 2 Rams.
