Newport tight end Drew Sample committed to Washington on Friday night, reneging on an earlier verbal to Boise State.

A three-star player, Sample had committed to Boise State this past June, but reopened his recruitment after former Broncos coach Chris Petersen was hired by the Huskies.

“Ever since I got the offer I’ve been definitely talking to my family about the different opportunities I have at UW,” Sample said. “We think it’s the best place for me, not only football, but [also] getting a great education.”

At 6 foot 5, 235 pounds, Sample has developed into a blocking tight end this season after Newport’s offensive philosophy shifted. Sample had eight receptions for 265 yards and five touchdowns this season in helping Newport to the state playoffs.

Sample said he thinks he can provide both aspects to the UW offense and that Petersen likes his versatility.

“It definitely was tough because Boise was always good to me,” Sample said. “It was more about me and different things. It was nothing against Boise, it’s a great program.”
