Walker Meyers

Kentwood wrestling

His name should be something like Stomper, rather than Walker, after the way he handled his six opponents last week. The junior 132-pounder pinned each one in the first round. Five of those wins came in the Battle of the Border. Meyers is 7-0 overall and all have been by pin. “Walker has come out this season, tearing through his opponents,” coach Ken Sroka said.

Sidney Rielly

Rielly really knows how to fill up a stat sheet. In the Seagulls’ two wins last week, the senior guard put together 57 points (including a season-high 33 against Mount Vernon), 10 rebounds, seven steals and five assists. She was 18 for 18 at the free-throw line. “She showed versatility by scoring in a variety of ways,” coach John Low said. “Her defensive intensity also helped set a tone for our team.”

Sure, folks knew coach Zach Ward’s Spartans would be good this season, and they started at No. 10 in the 3A rankings. Then they showed just how good, with a 76-61 victory over Arlington, rated No. 6 in 4A at the time. Stanwood added wins over Oak Harbor and Union to improve to 5-0.
