SAMMAMISH — In Friday night’s football game between Eastside Catholic and O’Dea that was more of a track meet, O’Dea running back Myles Gaskin outran Crusader after Crusader.

With first place in the Metro Mountain Division on the line, Gaskin scored five touchdowns on the ground as visiting O’Dea conquered Eastside Catholic 63-45.

By the time 10 offensive plays were run on Friday night, 28 points had been put on the board. The Crusaders (5-2, 3-1) and Irish (7-0, 3-0 Metro League) each scored on their first two possessions, including touchdowns of at least 68 yards for each team.

Gaskin scooted 80 yards down the left sideline to tie the score at 14 with just more than four minutes into the first quarter.

“Our defense came out a little slow,” Gaskin said. “But we bounced back, got a few key stops, and made some big plays.”

Gaskin’s touchdown sparked 28 unanswered points by the Irish, who rushed for more than 300 yards before halftime. Eastside Catholic signal caller Harley Kirsch had 208 yards through the air in the first half, but his team trailed 35-21 at the break.

O’Dea proceeded to run away from Eastside Catholic, outscoring its opponent 14-3 in the third quarter via two Gaskin touchdowns.

If the Irish beats Bainbridge next week, they will clinch a spot in the Metro League championship game.

“Our goal right now is to face O’Dea in the semifinals of the state playoffs,” Crusaders coach Jeremy Thielbahr said. “We’d like another shot at them.”
