High school football story lines: Federal Way tested at linebacker position
Federal Way’s depth at linebacker has been depleted the past few weeks, forcing the team to shuffle offensive linemen to middle linebacker and defensive linemen to linebackers. Jared Pulu is most likely out for the season after suffering a torn labrum in Week 1, and David Tiumalu just came back last week after an ankle injury.
King’s sophomore gets start at QB
King’s quarterback Koa Wilkins is the fifth quarterback coach Jim Shapiro has started as a sophomore. Shapiro described Wilkins as a competitor who has gained the respect of the upperclassmen already. “Sometimes he makes sophomore decisions,” Shapiro said, “but he bounces back.” Wilkins has led his team to a 3-1 record this season, and they take on 2-2 Sultan on Friday.
Wide-open SPSL begins league play
It’s bad news/good news for the six SPSL 3A teams this week. The bad news: They are a collective 5-19. The good news: They are all unbeaten in league play, which doesn’t start until Friday. “The whole league is kind of struggling but we are all 0-0 (in SPSL play), so it’s wide open. And I have no idea how it is going to shake out once league starts,” Auburn Mountainview coach Jared Gervais wrote in an email. Enumclaw (2-2) is the only team without a losing record.
