High school football story lines: At 3-0, Auburn Riverside rising
Week 4 story lines.
Few people outside of the Auburn Riverside faithful expected the Ravens to start the season 3-0, especially after last year’s 1-9 campaign. But they’ve got a new coach in Bryant Thomas (who played a key role in Federal Way’s success the past few years), a seasoned quarterback in Kevin Thomson and a new attitude.
Thomas said his players are still out to earn opponents’ respect and aren’t taking 0-3 Kentlake lightly this week, especially since AR is just 1-11 against the Falcons, with their lone win coming in 2005.
Watch out for Lakewood
Lakewood rose to No. 3 this week in our rankings, and Friday, they play a decent Cascade conference team in Archbishop Murphy. If the team’s performance keeps up, they should be able to stay in the top three in 2A.
Lakeside needs to rebound
Lakeside needed to win its first eight games of the season to make the playoffs because of its independent schedule. With their loss Saturday to Bishop Blanchet, it will be interesting to see how the Lions respond when they take on Renton on Thursday.
Running backs in spotlight
Newport vs. Issaquah might as well be Conner Baumann vs. Jake Gellatly. Both were KingCo 4A All-Crown Division running backs last season, and both are expected to continue putting up big rushing numbers.
Baumann broke Newport rushing records last season, and Gellatly is on pace to break Issaquah records this season.
Bishop Blanchet has depth
Bishop Blanchet’s quarterbacks haven’t been completely healthy this season, but thanks to an explosive running game, the Braves have not missed a beat. On Saturday, third-string quarterback Cam Martin helped lead them to a 58-13 win over Lakeside.
