Winston Hallam-Eames

Nathan Hale track & field

Hallam-Eames likes to throw things. In the fall, it's a football as the Raiders' quarterback. Now, it's the discus and shot, and occasionally even the javelin. Last week, the junior uncorked a career-best heave of 176 feet, 9 inches in the discus to take the state lead. His previous long was 159-10. He also had a personal best mark in the shot at 47-2. Darby Haskins, one of Hale's throwing coaches, said Hallam-Eames spent most of the winter lifting weights and making throws. "He's really committed to the art of throwing," the coach said.

Maddy Kristjanson

Mountlake Terrace softball

Big bat, big arm — Kristjanson showed off both last week to key three victories. She went 10 for 12 at the plate with four home runs — including a pair of grand slams — and two doubles. She had a solo homer and grand slam in the same inning against Edmonds-Woodway. The junior slugger drove in 13 runs, scored eight times and also pitched a pair of complete games and played shortstop in the other contest. "Overall, she is just a fun player to watch," coach Shannon Rasmussen said. "She has made some amazing plays at shortstop already this year and is a great defensive pitcher, stopping everything hit in her direction."

Mariner boys soccer team

Coach Vince DeSimone's Marauders are on the move. And in the right direction. Last season, they were a middle-of-the-pack team in the WesCo 4A South. This spring they're 4-0-0 in league after a pair of one-goal victories last week — 2-1 over Lynnwood and 1-0 over Edmonds-Woodway. Miguel Medina and Cristian Robles scored against Lynnwood. Yaya Jammeh (goal) and Silvan Katynskiy (shutout) keyed the win over E-W.

Stars of the week are selected by The Seattle Times staff and published Tuesdays. Nominations may be emailed by Sunday night to sports@seattletimes.com.
