The thought had to at least creep into their minds.

Since losing to the Lakeside Lions on Nov. 30, the Seattle Prep Panthers had won 10 of their next 12 games, vaulting to No. 4 in the Class 3A girls basketball rankings.

But on Friday night at Seattle Prep, the Panthers and Lions were tied with 6:14 to play before Prep scored nine of the next 10 points to pull away for a Metro Mountain Division victory, 52-48.

"Anytime we play Lakeside, it's going to be a grind-it-out game," Prep coach Michelle Hall said. "It kind of reminded me of the first game. We pulled to a tie and just battled it out. ... It's always nice to get a late win when you lose to a team early."

Senior Michaela Carew scored four of her team-leading 15 points during the 9-1 run that sealed the win for Prep (13-3, 10-2 Metro) over the scrappy Lions (11-5, 9-3 Metro).

Carew was one of three Prep players to score in double figures.

"That's a good sign," Hall said. "We're a good team when everybody is scoring, not having to depend on one person to put the ball in their hands."

Senior guard Holly Tonry and junior guard Mary Ann Santucci each had 13 points for the Panthers.

The Panthers are tied with Holy Names (13-2, 10-2) for first place in the division.

Junior guard Christina Cheledinas led Lakeside with 16 points, while senior forward Kaylee Best had 14.
