Sixteen minutes was all the unfocused basketball Holy Names girls' basketball coach Lee Adams was willing to watch.

He ended Thursday's practice 16 minutes in after Adams said they were lethargic, apathetic and already owed him 20 sets of wind sprints.

They looked much more focused Friday night as Camariah King scored a season-high 23 points to lead the Cougars (9-1, 7-1 3A Metro) to a 39-38 overtime victory over Lakeside (8-3; 6-1) to retain sole possession atop the the Metro League standings.

King hit five three-pointers, including three in the second quarter, and scored all five of Holy Names' overtime points.

"We have had a hard time mentally coming together as a team lately, so we really had to pull it together," King said. "With school starting on Wednesday, then also getting back to practice, it's been hard for us to focus."

Adams didn't stand for it at practice Thursday.

"It was absolutely horrible," Adams said. "I told them that we know how to play unfocused, so we don't need to practice unfocused. I think it was just a mixture of some hard workouts we had over the break and then having to deal with school starting back up.

"But I was really happy with their focus the last minute and a half of regulation and through overtime."

King had a chance to end the game in regulation when she heaved a half-court shot at the horn that banked off the backboard, clanged off the front of the rim and almost fell through.

King then scored the first points of overtime by drilling a three-pointer. Lakeside coach Patrick Chinn called a timeout and his team responded by scoring two straight baskets to take a one-point lead, but Holy Names regained the lead on two King free throws with about a minute left.

After a Lakeside miss, Holy Names ran out the clock as King outmaneuvered two Lakeside defenders and avoided a foul. "We were supposed to foul," Chinn said. "That's what we meant by 'Go get her' and that's what 'Red' means. But we couldn't get her."
