SUMNER — Defense alone was not enough to earn Providence Classical Christian of Lynnwood a return trip to the Class 2B/1B boys soccer state championship game.

St. George's of Spokane bested Providence 1-0 in overtime in a semifinal game Friday night at Sunset Chev Stadium.

St. George's (17-2-1) will play another Spokane-area team, Northwest Christian of Colbert, at 4 p.m. Saturday for the title.

Providence (10-6), the 2010 state champion and runner-up last year, plays Mount Vernon Christian for third place at noon.

The Dragons' offense kept Providence busy throughout the second half, taking 18 shots (seven on goal). But the Highlanders came up with big plays.

In the 57th minute, St. George's had a breakaway that drew Providence goalkeeper Daniel Mathiason out of goal. But the back-line defenders came up with a stop.

Mathiason also provided some heroics, making a one-handed save in the 64th minute.

But with 1:51 left in the five-minute overtime period, the Highlanders' defense finally made a mistake. Mathiason dropped the ball inside the box, and St. George's forward Erik Muelheims capitalized on a wide-open look at the goal.

"We had a hard time generating some good offense against them, so the pressure was on the defense most of the game," said Providence coach Nathan Morris. "And I felt like they did a really good job."

Other boys semifinal

Payton Gray scored in the third minute and Austin Friedly had a hat trick as Northwest Christian of Colbert (12-4) rolled past Mount Vernon Christian (17-3) and into the title game.

Jill Leszynski had two goals and an assist and Olivia Tillinghast and Sara Hastings also scored as the defending state champion Grizzlies advanced to Saturday's 2 p.m. title game. Leszynski and Hastings are freshmen. Goalkeeper Hannah Posting made four saves for Bear Creek (14-4). The Grizzlies from Redmond outshot Crosspoint 19-6, including 11-1 on the way to a 2-0 halftime lead. Crosspoint Academy, from Bremerton, lost twice to Bear Creek this season in Sea-Tac League games.

Sage Atkins scored off a corner kick just 1:17 into the game as the Tigers advanced to the final. Atkins scored again early in the second half with an assist from Sarah Labrasca, who added the third goal in the 62nd minute. The Tigers outshot the Mountain Lions from Winthrop, 14-6.
