Federal Way falls to Jefferson of Portland, 62-58 | King Holiday Hoopfest

Perfection is no longer an option for the Federal Way boys basketball team.

But another state championship is.

The Eagles, ranked 28th in the country by ESPN RISE, saw a 29-game win streak end Monday with a 62-58 loss to Jefferson of Portland in the marquee game of the King Holiday Hoopfest at Edmundson Pavilion.

Disappointing, yes, but not devastating.

"We just don't want to lose to anybody in our state," Federal Way senior Isiah Umipig said.

Jefferson's Terrence Jones, a 6-foot-9 guard touted as one of the top seniors in the nation, toyed with a triple-double with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks as the Democrats (10-3) handed Federal Way its first loss in more than a year. The Eagles won their final 17 last season after a Jan. 17 loss to Kentwood, capturing their first state title, and were off to a 12-0 start this season.

Eagles coach Jerome Collins told his players to remember this feeling and to learn from the game.

"I just hate to lose," he said. "Some coaches believe a loss is good for you. I don't. I'd much rather win close and learn from that."

The Eagles never really found a rhythm and made dozens of uncharacteristic mistakes. Yet they hung in there and twice fought back from big deficits — including a 15-point hole in the fourth quarter.

Federal Way used a 15-4 spurt to cut the gap to four and had the ball with 1:52 left, turned it over and never got closer.

Cole Dickerson showed the effects of the stomach flu that had forced him to miss five days of practice, although he finished strong with 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half.

"I wasn't really in the groove of things," the 6-7 senior said. "I guess that's what you expect after being sick.

Umipig had 15 points for the Eagles and Robert Christopher chipped in 12, nine in the first half.

Jefferson got 17 points and eight rebounds from Stephen Madison, who helped open things up for Jones.

Jones had 14 points and six blocks in the first half as Jefferson took a 32-22 lead. Federal Way trailed only 18-14 at the end of the first quarter and could have been even closer as Umipig missed two of three free throws with 4.4 seconds on the clock. But Jones keyed an 8-2 run with a big-time jam early in the second and the Democrats were in control.
