PORTLAND — In a game that produced 213 points, Washington's boys credited defense with bringing them back from a large deficit and beating their Oregon counterparts Sunday in the Northwest Shootout at the University of Portland.

The all-star basketball game for high-school seniors was a wildly entertaining showcase of talent. Washington came back from the brink of disaster to take a late lead and then held its breath to the final second in a 108-105 victory.

DeAngelo Casto of Ferris (Spokane) made one of two free throws with six seconds left to put Washington up by three. Brad Tinsley's last-second three-point shot for Oregon drew only rim.

"We came through and got the job done because we kept up the intensity," Casto said. "We took it a point at a time."

Washington looked outgunned early in the second half as Oregon, which still leads the all-time series 9-5, took a 67-48 lead.

But Oregon cooled off and Washington's relentless pursuit of loose balls and better defense began to pay off. Brandon Magee of Bethel finally put Washington ahead with the first of his three-point plays on consecutive possessions. Washington out-rebounded Oregon, which featured three Division I frontline players, 57-39. And 27 offensive rebounds were enough to overcome Oregon's accurate outside shooting.

"Better defense brought us back," said Rainier Beach's Reggie Moore, who scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. "[Oregon] was getting a lot of open shots."

Casto added 19 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots to share the MVP award with Moore.

Brian Conklin led Oregon with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Washington girls rout Oregon

USC-bound point guard Ashley Corral of Prairie was the dominant player on the floor and hit five-three pointers in a 100-77 Washington girls victory.

Corral was well-known to most of the Portland-area players on Oregon's roster, but they still had no answer for her. She had 21 points, three assists and two steals on her way to the MVP award.

Washington leads Oregon 8-6 in the series.

"This was a fun game," Corral said. "I was playing with a lot of friends and there was also pride on the line. It's my last high-school game ever."

Corral's back-to-back three-pointers broke open a 15-15 game. Washington hit 13 of 31 three-point attempts, Oregon only 2 of 16.

Lynden Christian's Brianne Ryan added 15 points and Meadowdale's Eryn Jones scored 13 for Washington.
