SPOKANE — Bear Creek couldn't cool off Jared Cates of Riverside Christian as the Grizzlies from Redmond lost 66-44 Wednesday in their opening game at the Class 2B boys state basketball tournament at Spokane Arena.

Cates hit 10 of 12 shots and scored 20 points and Chris Pynch added 17 points for the top-ranked Crusaders (21-0) from Yakima.

Jamie Meyer scored 16 for unranked Bear Creek (21-3), which had a 14-game winning streak snapped in its first boys state-tournament appearance.

Other boys games

Lind-Ritzville 56, Seattle Lutheran 37

Jamie Stevenson scored 16 points and Lind-Ritzville held the Saints (16-12) to their fourth-lowest scoring total of the season.

Darrington 68, Northwest Christian (Lacey) 65

Cory Hoveskeland scored 20 as the Loggers (21-5) held off a late rally by the Navigators from Lacey. Ryan Fox scored 28 for Northwest Christian.

La Conner 81, Wellpinit 68

Jason Lindeman scored 37 and Taylor Thostenson 20 to power the seventh-ranked Braves (20-3) to a first-round win.

Girls games

St. George's 53, Evergreen Lutheran 32

Chessey Thomas got 14 of her 16 points in the second half as the Dragons from Spokane had a strong final 24 minutes. Kelsey D'Andrade led the Eagles (16-10) from Des Moines with 11 points.

Lind-Ritzville 59, Seattle Lutheran 24

Seattle Lutheran's girls (19-8) were no luckier against Lind-Ritzville than were the Saints' boys, as they were held to a season-low point total.

Mossyrock 51, Shoreline Christian 41

The third-ranked Crusaders (20-3) were surprised by the No. 8 Vikings.

Notes

• Two-time defending boys champ Northwest Christian of Colbert, ranked No. 3, crushed Napavine 66-39.

• The top-ranked La Salle girls, who haven't lost since last year's title game, buried Northwest Christian of Colbert 78-42.
