Park the car and join the commuting crowd going it on two wheels.

Monday, May 12, begins National Bike to Work Week, culminating with National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 16.

It’s all part of National Bike Month.

The Cascade Bicycle Club says that during bike month last year, riders logged 1.7 million miles and avoided 1.6 million pounds — or 86,000 gallons of gasoline worth — of carbon emissions. Riders also burned 84,799,050 calories, the equivalent to nearly 80,000 pints of Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough ice cream and 430,000 pints of Pike IPA beer.

The end of Bike Month will be celebrated at the Ballard Bike Street Party from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May, 29, along Ballard Avenue Northwest from 22nd Avenue. The party, held as part of with Seattle Summer Streets, will feature live music, vendors, a fashion show, and prizes.
