4 books to kick-start your fitness regimen

Fitness writer Kelly Turner recommends four titles that will inspire you to practice healthful habits this summer.

Need a little summer reading while relaxing on these hot summer days? Put away the trashy romance novels and use your leisure time wisely by picking up something that will inspire you to achieve your goals.

“Switch,” by Chip and Dan Heath

Change is hard, whether it’s intentional — like picking up an exercise habit and eating better — or out of your control, like a big move or career switch. The Heath brothers use an easy-to-follow model to break down how behavior change occurs and how you can not only elicit the changes you seek, but handle unexpected occurrences without falling to pieces.

“The Fit Bottomed Girl’s Anti Diet,” by Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead

Diet is a four-letter word around these girls. Full disclosure: I used to write for the super popular FBG website, and the reason I did (and loved it so much) was because founders Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead knew the key to changing your body is loving who you are first. In their first book, they share 10 principles of exercise, proper nutrition and attitude that will enable you to become truly healthy inside and out.

“Forks Over Knives: The Cookbook,” by Del Sroufe

I know I can’t be the only one who enjoys reading cookbooks. I also know that after watching all the horrific food-industry documentaries, including 2011’s “Forks Over Knives,” I was left thinking, “So what is OK to eat?” According to author Del Sroufe, a plant-based diet — no meat, no dairy, no oil — can not only help you lose weight but cure chronic diseases — and taste pretty darn good, too. You don’t have to go completely plant-based, but we could all make an effort to incorporate more leafy greens and juicy fruits into our diets. With these 300 healthful and easy-to-prepare recipes, you’ll spend hours bookmarking the ones you want to try.

“Run or Die,” by Kilian Jornet

Intense title, intense message. If you want a read that is going to make you want to jump up and sprint, this is it. Kilian Jornet, one of the best endurance athletes of all time at the ripe old age of 25, takes you through the biggest adventures in his young life: running up mountains, winning world championship titles, skiing the world’s toughest slopes. But it’s not to brag. Jornet shares his experiences to motivate you to push your own limits — those others set on you and, most important, the ones you place on yourself.
