One way to kick off fall: Run a race that ends at a beer garden.

Befitting the neighborhood’s idiosyncratic nature, Sunday’s 10 a.m. Fremont Oktoberfest 5K — the ultimate beer run — offers other alternatives, too.

Men weighing more than 220 pounds and women exceeding 175 pounds are eligible to compete in the Beer Belly Division and get a head start.

“We honor the most elite Oktoberfest athletes,” says creative director Phil Megenhardt, “those who have spent years indulging in Northwest microbrews, and who are sporting the much sought after beer belly!”

Runners also can compete with friends for multiple award categories: biggest team, fastest team and best-dressed team.

Preregistration is $25. That includes a seasonal beer for racers 21 years or older, and a Fremont Oktoberfest 5K T-shirt (guaranteed with registration by Thursday, Sept. 19).
